Extremely High Pollution Measurements Several parts of the capital registered an AQI over 500, which equals 10x the healthy level set by the global health authority. Certain monitoring stations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of 1,800, equating to 15-20x above healthy limits. Firecracker Prohibition and Current Changes Since 2020, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the dangerous pollution that covers the capital as winter approaches. Nevertheless recently, the current regional government petitioned the judicial authority to seek a modification of the restrictions. Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and environment". Court Decision and Implementation Much to the frustration of public health and environmental campaigners, judges agreed to the request, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during designated time windows throughout the festival. During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the regulated periods across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type. Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi showed air quality spiking around late evening to the most severe levels seen during celebrations in at least recent memory. International Effects The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab pointing to deteriorating air quality in Lahore on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the events. Persistent Pollution Issue The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation continuing to worsen. During celebratory seasons, the levels of hazardous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to 70% higher the peak readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the planet's dirtiest city. Various Contamination Sources The situation in the city is caused by a mix of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, development work, rubbish burning and smoke from crop residue ignition in adjacent areas of neighboring agricultural zones. In these regions, farmers illegally set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, producing toxic smog that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as cooler air descends. Medical and Financial Impact Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to various research. This pollution results in elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can result in oncological diseases. The pollution is estimated to be causing ten thousand untimely deaths annually in Delhi.
