Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.

At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
